Schedule A from Form 990 is used by organizations to report their status as public charities. This form helps the IRS determine if an organization meets the requirements to be classified as a public charity instead of a private foundation. It includes information about public support and revenue sources. Completing this form is important because it ensures compliance with tax regulations, helping organizations maintain their tax-exempt status and continue receiving donations and grants from the public.
Schedule A helps organizations report their public charity status. Here’s what it’s used for:
Read the instructions carefully to understand eligibility criteria for public charity status.
Gather required documentation, including financial statements and support data.
Complete each section of the form accurately, ensuring all information aligns with your organization’s mission.
Double-check your entries for accuracy and completeness before finalizing.
Review any additional schedules that may apply to your organization.
Consult a tax professional if unsure about specific requirements or definitions.
Organizations that need to complete Schedule An include public charities and private foundations. They do this to determine their public charity status and provide information about their public support.
Afterward, the form is used by the IRS to assess compliance with tax-exempt status and by donors to evaluate charitable organizations.
Certain organizations do not need to file Schedule A. For example, private foundations and organizations that are not classified as public charities do not require this form. Additionally, if an organization has been classified as a church, an integrated auxiliary of a church, or a convention or association of churches, it is also exempt from filing Schedule A.
The deadline for Schedule A (Form 990) is the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your organization's tax year. For most organizations, this means it is due on May 15 if your tax year ends on December 31.
If you need more time, you can apply for a 6-month extension. However, remember that the extension applies to filing the form, not to paying taxes owed.
